VERA RUBIN

(1928-2016)

Everything we can see in our universe, from planets to ladybirds, is made of matter built from atoms. But scientists believe that eighty-five percent of all matter is a different mysterious substance called dark matter We know almost nothing about dark matter, only that it must exist. The first person to realize its existence was a woman named Vera Rubin.
As a child, Vera would lie awake at night, gazing out through her window at the stars. Wanting to get a closer look, she built her own telescope with the help of her father.
In 1918, Vera was the only astronomy major to graduate from her college. She was told that some universities didn’t accept women in her field. Eventually, she found a place, earned a degree, and began teaching and researching.
Together with a scientist called Kent Ford, Vera examined the light coming to us from stars in distant galaxies The more they learned, the more things didn’t quite make sense. The stars were moving too quickly for the amount of matter contained in them. Vera reasoned that the only way to explain it would be if most of the matter in these distant galaxies was invisible: If most of the matter was dark matter.
Scientists were hesitant to agree at first as the theory was so outlandish. But the evidence was unarguable it’s now almost universally accepted, even if we still have no idea quite what dark matter is.

Wait, the salon owner called out. You seem like a polite boy. You can start on Monday.

It was then that Vidal decided if he was going to be a hairdresser, he was going to be a revolutionary one. He worked as hard as he could and dedicated himself to becoming the best.

By the time he was twenty-six. Vidal had his own salon. It was so small that people had to sit waiting on the stairs They didn’t mind. Talk of Vidal’s talent had spread throughout the capital and everyone wanted an appointment.
