B-118 Krishan Nagar
Delhi

August 4, 20 _

The Editor
The Indian Express
New Delhi

Sir

I would like to bring to the notice of the authorities through the columns of your esteemed paper the poor condition of the roads and streets of our locality.
The roads in Krishan Nagar are in a bad shape, having pits at every step, and these pits are responsible for accidents. During the rainy season they get filled with dirty water and become places for mosquitoes to breed. Heaps of dust and rubbish are seen scattered everywhere. Stinking drains make it impossible for anyone to pass through the streets.

It is high time the authorities wake up and take effective remedial steps: or some epidemic might break out leading to a great loss of life.

Yours faithfully

Example 6. Write a letter to the Editor, Hindustan Times, about inadequate water supply in your locality,

The Editor
Hindustan Times
New Delhi

Sir

Through the esteemed columns of your newspaper. I wish to draw the attention of the municipal authorities towards the inadequate water supply in our locality. It is really very unfortunate that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi is rather unconcerned about the provision of civic amenities to the public in our area in particular Water supply gets discontinued at peak hours in the morning when everyone has got to get ready for the day. Even when the supply is intact, the pressure is terribly low. All this causes a great inconvenience to everyone
May we expect that the water supply will soon be regulated?

Yours truly
Mayur Kothari

 8. Write a letter to your friend telling him how you saved a life.

Civil Lines Allahabad January 12, 2017  My dear You will be glad to know that yesterday I performed a brave act by saving a drowning child. Yesterday, while I was returning home after visiting my uncle, I saw a child being carried away by the swift current of the stream that washed our city. I wasted no time and taking off my clothes at once jumped into the stream. I caught hold of the child by his leg and slowly swam to the bank of the river. The child was unconscious. The first-aid tips we had learnt at school came to my help. I lay him on the ground and started pressing his back. Water came out of his mouth. I then tried to give him artificial respiration. After about fifteen minutes, my efforts bore fruit and the child was saved. In the meanwhile, the child’s parents also arrived at the scene and they embraced me. They were very happy and thanked me for saving the life of their son. This was a deed that gave me real inner satisfaction. Convey my sincere regards to uncle and aunt. Sub: Reckless Driving
Sir,
It is high time that proper steps are taken to put a stop to the reckless driving of motor-cars in the narrow streets of our thickly populated town. Only yesterday, a poor old beggar very narrowly escaped from being run over by a motor-car going at full speed. He was crossing the street when a car came dashing along at a speed of ninety kilometres an hour. Such reckless driving causes fatal accidents to women and children trying to cross the roads.
It is true that regulations regarding the speed limit do exist. But unless the police are strict in enforcing them, what do the drivers care about these regulations? The police seem to take little or no notice of offenders. And so, motor-car accidents are almost a daily occurrence.
I hope that the public, who are the worst sufferers, will bring pressure to bear upon the police and municipal authorities to put a stop to reckless driving before we have any more deaths due to accidents.

24.Letter to the Editor of a newspaper on the nuisance of beggars

12 April 20.

The Editor

The Hindu

Hyderabad 50 0009

Dear Sir,

It is high time drastic measures were taken to put an end to, or at least to regulate, begging. These lazy drones have been a public nuisance.

Many of the beggars that infest our streets are not really poor and unable to work. They are able-bodied men, who could work if they liked. But they find it easier to beg than to work hard. It is these beggars who stand at the door and keep shouting for alms though they are asked to go. They cause a lot of disturbance to us. The government should take steps to check such beggars. Also, the public should refuse alms to them and put them down with a strong hand.

We should of course help the deserving poor, those who are old and weak, blind or lame and therefore unable to work. Even in such cases, charities, rather than people, would be of real help.

Yours faithfully,

  1. Mahesh

To

The Editor

Delhi Times

Sub.: Problem caused by stray cattle on roads.

Dear Sir,

Through your esteemed newspaper I want to draw your kind attention towards the stray cattle that are freely roaming on busy roads of Delhi. They have no fear of vehicles. They cross roads at their will or comfortably settle down in the middle of roads. These animals often cause traffic jams and also create a lot of difficulties to people. Sometimes road accidents occur when the motorists try to save these cattle.

Some of these cattle are very old and are seen on roads during day and night. Their owners do not take care for them.

Its a high time and now the authorities should take some effective steps to get rid of the menace of stray from the roads.

Dear Sir,

I am the resident of Punjabi Bagh. We are regularly facing the frequent break down in electric supply. In our area electricity goes off 3-4 times a day and some times it is restored only after several hours. Not only this, the voltage fluctuations cause inconvenience to us and damages our costly electrical appliances.

The students are worst effected in this situation. The examination is very near and as the light goes off in the night, they are unable to prepare for the examination.

We have made several complaints to the area officials but all in vain. I will be grateful you kindly take necessary action to ensure proper electric supply to our colony.

I hereby to state that I am the student of class VIIIth C of your school. As I could not appear in the monthly test of English held yesterday, my English teacher Mr. A.N. I, thereby, request you to remit the fine imposed on me and I assure you that will it not happen in future.

Dear Sir,

Through your esteemed newspaper I want to draw the attention towards the rise in prices of essential commodities. Today, the value of the rupee is going down. There are many reasons for the rise in prices like increase in the cost of petrol or diesel, high standard of living, etc. The housewives find it difficult to manage the family budget. The government should take immediate steps to control the prices of essential commodities. These must be brought down to a reasonable level. Government should take strict actions against the traders charging high prices or doing black marketing. Government should open move fair price shops.

Its good to know that today also, goodness still exists and there are many good, honest and helpful people like you. I express my heartiest thanks to you and extend to you and invitation to visit my home. It will give me immense pleasure to meet people like you.

To

The Chairman,

The Municipal Corporation,

New Delhi

Dear Sir,

I want to draw your attention towards the poor sanitary condition of Azad Market. No health officer has ever visited this locality for the last six months. I request you to visit and check the foul smells and heaps of garbage along the roadside which is presenting a picture of insanitary condition of the locality. The market has no drains and not single dustbin is placed garbage inside to put. The poor people, being deprived of sanitary amenities in their houses, dump all the rubbish into the lane. The sweepers too are not doing their work properly. The garbage heaps are there all over and it has become the breeding place of flies, mosquitoes and disease spreading germs.

I am afraid if suitable measures are not taken immediately we shall have a terrible outbreak of epidemic.

Yours sincerely,

Ashok Kumar

38.Write a letter to your friend apologizing for not being able to keep an invitation to dinner.

Dear Anjali,

I hope my letter finds you in good health. I’m writing to you regarding the conversation we had last week after the monthly quiz. You had invited me over for dinner to your place and, as always, I gladly accepted, drooling in anticipation of the delicious spread. As you know, I did not eventually turn up. You must think it was awfully rude of me but things were not in my control. Soon after getting on my scooter, I realized I had left my phone back at the venue of the quiz. I rushed back but the caretaker at Menezes Braganza Hall had already locked up and left. I was heartbroken. I had saved up for almost a year to be able to afford it, and there was little chance of me getting it back. And this was not the end of the day’s misfortune. While riding back, possibly because I was preoccupied with my loss, I missed a traffic signal at the next crossing and crashed into a car. Now my leg is in a cast and my scooter is badly damaged.

Had I remembered your phone number I would have called you, shared my tale of double misfortune and explained my mysterious absence. have borrowed my friend Ardhendu’s phone temporarily. But having lost all the contact numbers along with my phone, I cannot reach out to anyone. I am sure you are very upset with me – I have not received a single call from you in the last couple of days. But I remembered your address and lacking other means to reach you, I am sending you my apology via snail mail. I am sure you’ll forgive my rudeness in not turning up for your dinner when you read this and any misgivings you might have had about my behaviour will be clarified. remain the most ardent admirer of your cooking skills – I do honestly believe you should apply for the Master Chef competition! Hope to hear from you soon.

Lots of love,

Madhura

Dear Madam,

Subject: Restoration of the local children’s playground

I am writing as a concerned citizen to bring the condition of the local children’s playground to your attention. In a city where green spaces are fast disappearing, this is the only park with a playground within a radius of two kilometres. However, the playground is littered with plastic and concrete waste from nearby construction sites. Further, the swings have rusted and have sharp edges which can injure any child. The other playground rides such as the merry-go-round and the slide are also in a state of acute disrepair. The overall atmosphere is dismal and discourages children from going there.

I would request you to undertake an initiative to ensure regular maintenance of the park. As a first step, we require a thorough cleaning-up of the park. Installing garbage bins and putting up signs discouraging littering would be an important step and would also go a long way in keeping the grounds clean. Repairing the swings and other rides will also ensure the safety of the children.

Increasingly, children are becoming addicted to video games, television and other forms of entertainment leading to an inactive lifestyle. Having a functional playground will encourage them to play in open spaces. I hope the playground will soon be restored to its former glory under your able supervision.

Yours sincerely,

Rajiv Dutta

Dear Chanmony,

I reached home yesterday. I really had a most wonderful and exciting time with you and your family during the exchange program last week. I wish to thank you all for hosting me and showing me your beautiful city and its culture. The ruins of the ancient Angkor Var temple and the Apsara dance were particularly interesting and educative. I never imagined our ancient Indian culture has such deep roots that spread so far and wide thousands of years ago. I am really impressed that while Cambodian culture is so steeped in its ancient past, it is so open to modern western influences and offers such a wonderful mix of the Hindu and Buddhist religions and culture. I really enjoyed the flavors of your food and colouful pageantry as much the greenery everywhere. I hope to spend some time again with you when you visit us during the summer vacation and show you the birthplace of the culture that is so yours now.

Yours affectionately,

Priya Sriram

45.Letter to the Editor of a newspaper, about the recklessness of drivers on Kolkata roads

298 N S Road

Naktala, Kolkata 700040

The Editor

The Times of India

Subject: The problem of reckless driving in the city

Sir,

I would like to draw the attention of the government and the people to the problem of reckless driving on Kolkata roads, through your esteemed daily.

I have noticed with grave concern that vehicles on city roads are becoming dangerously reckless these days. There are rules against reckless driving, but these rules fail to save human lives when we fail to show concern for our fellow beings. Time is surely precious but human life is priceless.

There is an unhealthy competition among buses and other vehicles on the roads, to overtake one another. Pedestrians fall victim to this mindless competition.

Such practices cannot be stopped merely by implementing rules. Passengers as well as pedestrians must take a stand against this. The collective protest of passengers against such reckless driving will put a check on the drivers.

Yours truly

Drishti Basak
